2 dead, 3 hurt in New York car accident

On Behalf of | Oct 12, 2016 | Car Accidents

A single-vehicle crash in upstate New York has claimed two lives and sent a further three people to hospitals, according to police. New York authorities responded to the fatal car accident around 2:00 a.m. in Slate Hill. So far, police are still investigating what caused the accident. No charges are likely to be filed since the driver was among those killed.

The accident report suggests the 19-year-old driver may have been traveling too fast for the wet road conditions on the early morning of Oct. 9. As a result, his pickup truck left the roadway and struck a utility pole near Route 6. The force of the impact was enough to eject all five occupants from the vehicle. It is unclear at this time how many of the occupants, if any, were wearing seat belts.

Two of the four passengers in the truck were treated for broken bones and have since been released from medical care. A third passenger suffered internal injuries and is still in serious condition. One rear-seat passenger was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, while the driver was rushed to a local hospital and pronounced dead later that day.

It appears the driver may have been operating his vehicle in a reckless manner when the car accident took place. Under New York law, injured parties and the families of the deceased are entitled to file personal injury and wrongful death suits against the driver’s estate and/or anyone else who may have owned the vehicle. These suits could make use of police evidence of recklessness on the part of the driver to help win settlements in civil court.
