1 dead, 1 injured in New York car crash

On Behalf of | Sep 26, 2016 | Car Accidents

A serious accident has left one man dead and another badly hurt. New York police responded to a car crash involving a tractor-trailer on Sept. 22. Police are not expecting to file charges as the driver they believe was responsible for the accident perished in the crash. However, their investigation is still ongoing as of this report.

The accident report says a 61-year-old man was headed southbound on Route 90 when the accident occurred. Apparently he drifted into the northbound lanes for reasons police have not yet been able to ascertain. As a result, he struck a northbound tractor-trailer head-on. The force of the impact sent his car spinning off the side of the road.

The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene by county coroners. The driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to a local hospital with injuries that have been described as non-life threatening. Police still do not know why the driver of the car drifted into the oncoming lane, but they plan to continue investigating until they find a satisfying answer.

If it becomes clear during the scope of the New York police investigation that the driver of the car was responsible — either through negligence or recklessness — for the car crash, further legal action could be available to the truck driver. A personal injury suit could be filed in civil court against the driver’s estate. Such a suit would make use of the evidence gathered by police indicating material responsibility on the part of the deceased driver.
