New warnings for infants born with brain injury related to birth

On Behalf of | Jun 5, 2014 | Brain Injury

New York readers may be familiar with the newly released report regarding brain injury in infants. The report specifically focuses on injuries that occur during the birth process. Brain injury during the birth process is tragic, yet it does happen on occasion. Some of these cases could be related to a stroke that occurs during birth, oxygen deprivation or a myriad of other reasons.

In one specific case that was noted, the baby suffered a stroke during birth and was eventually diagnosed with cerebral palsy. It is not known what caused this baby to have a stroke. The study focuses on these rare but serious cases in hopes that an understanding of what causes some of these brain injuries could lead to the prevention of many of these unfortunate instances.

There are many factors that could contribute to a brain injury. However, until recently, many practitioners only focused on oxygen levels of the baby during birth. Because it is often difficult to understand why brain injury occurs, many deserving families could find it complicated to pursue financial compensation. This is important because brain injuries can leave an infant with long-term damage that can end up costing thousands of dollars in extended healthcare requirements.

A brain injury is devastating for a family who was expecting a healthy and thriving infant. This study could lead to a clearer understanding in determining the responsible parties for many of these types of injuries. If any New York family feels that they have suffered because of a medical error that occurred during the birth of their child, they may have grounds to seek compensation from a civil claim to cover additional costs that have occurred.
