New York car accident injures nine

On Behalf of | May 5, 2014 | Car Accidents

When the unthinkable happens and a car crash injures a loved one, families are typically anxious to get answers. Authorities usually work to piece together exactly what occurred and determine who may be at fault and why. Sometimes, those facts may not be easily gathered, as is the case of a recent car accident here in New York that injured nine people.

The accident occurred in the early morning hours in the Bronx when an SUV was headed north with nine occupants in the vehicle. The driver was unable to maintain control of the SUV for an unknown reason and hit a guardrail at just about 5:15 a.m. The driver and one passenger remain in a local hospital in critical condition, while the other seven occupants were said to be stable.

Police have not determined the specific cause of the crash, but they note that they have not ruled out the possibility of the influence of drugs or alcohol. They apparently believe that the driver may have been traveling at a high rate of speed. One source says that while the driver has a license to drive issued by the Taxi and Limousine Commission, it may have been revoked at the time of the crash.

It remains unclear if criminal charges are contemplated against the driver, and authorities are still working to investigate the incident. Those who were injured in the car accident may opt to file a New York civil claim against the driver and owner of the vehicle. A successful litigation could result in the entry of a judgment for monetary damages that may be a welcome relief to the victims and their families.
