Wrongful death suit filed by New York family in daughter’s death

Losing a loved one is a tragedy no family should ever have to endure. It is particularly painful when that family member is young and just starting their adult life, full of potential and optimism for the future. A New York family is experiencing just such a misfortune as they mourn a daughter accidentally shot by police. Now the family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit in connection with her death.

The incident happened about a year ago in the home that a young woman shared with her twin sister, where they were living while attending university. They and several other students were in the home when a wanted man broke in and threatened the students with a gun. One student called the police, who reported to the home invasion. The woman was fatally shot when police attempted to apprehend the gunman, who was also shot.

The woman’s devastated family has now filed a wrongful death claim, claiming that the police behaved recklessly and needlessly endangered the woman during their response. The suit is filed against Nassau County and the county police. The local District Attorney is supportive of the officer’s actions and decided that he followed proper procedure.

This sad incident here in New York can serve as a reminder that there are ways to hold those believed to be responsible accountable for their actions when the death of a family member occurs. If the family’s wrongful death claim is successful, it could mean financial restitution for the woman’s family that may be useful in covering funeral costs or any other related expenses that might have arisen from this hardship. Hopefully, the family will soon be able to focus on healing and honoring the memory of the daughter they lost.
